Search Behaviour

How People Actually Search for Apartments

Apartment searches are specific. Each type of search needs its own page to rank, and that is where most apartment websites fall short.

Search typeExample searchPage that should rankWhat we do
Unit type and place2-bedroom apartments in [locality]Floor plan pageBuild one indexable page per configuration, with size, price range, and availability.
Rent or buyapartments for rent in [city]Community or project pageSeparate rental intent from purchase intent, so each page answers one question clearly.
Amenity or lifestylepet-friendly apartments with parkingAmenities pageTurn amenities into written, searchable content instead of a row of icons.
Nearby landmarkapartments near [metro station or tech park]Neighbourhood guideWrite location pages covering commute times, schools, and daily conveniences.
Project or brand name[project name] price and floor plansHome page and project pageProtect your branded results, so portals do not outrank you for your own name.
Near meapartments near meGoogle Business ProfileOptimise the profile, photos, and reviews for Maps through real estate local SEO.

This is the long-tail approach we describe in our guide to getting more property buyers from Google. Specific searches bring fewer visitors, but those visitors usually know what they want.

Portals vs Your Website

Listing Portals Rent You Traffic. Your Website Keeps It.

Most apartment marketing budgets go to portals. Here is what changes when your own site starts ranking.

Relying on listing portals

Visibility you pay for every month

  • You pay per listing or per lead, for as long as you want to be seen
  • Your units appear next to competing projects
  • The same enquiry is often sent to several advertisers
  • Visibility ends when the budget ends
  • The portal keeps the visitor data

Ranking your own website

Visibility you build once and keep improving

  • Enquiries arrive without a fee for each lead
  • Visitors see only your community
  • Every enquiry is exclusive to you
  • Rankings keep working between campaigns
  • You own the analytics and the audience

We do not suggest switching portals off overnight. SEO reduces how much you depend on them, one search at a time.

Site Structure

The Page Structure an Apartment Website Needs

Many apartment sites put every unit on one long page. Search engines then have a single page to rank for dozens of different searches. We split the site so each search has a page that answers it.

  1. One page per floor plan

Each configuration gets its own URL, title, and description, so it can rank for its own search.

  2. Unique copy for every unit type

Copying one description across units creates thin, duplicated pages that search engines tend to filter out.

  3. Leased or sold-out pages stay live

We mark the status instead of deleting the page, so it keeps the rankings and links it has earned.

  4. Fast pages on mobile

Many apartment searches happen on a phone. Compressed images and light pages are part of our real estate website SEO work.

What We Do

Apartment SEO Services, Start to Finish

Six parts of one campaign, each with clear deliverables, so you know what is being done every month. They sit within our wider real estate SEO services.

01

Apartment Keyword Research

We map the searches people make by unit type, budget, locality, and amenity, then separate rental intent from purchase intent so each page targets one clear need.

  • Keyword map for every page
  • Rent and sale intent split
  • Portal and competitor gap list
02

Community and Floor Plan Pages

Titles, headings, copy, and internal links for the community page and every floor plan, written so each unit type can rank on its own.

  • Unique copy per unit type
  • Image compression and alt text
  • Clear enquiry and visit booking paths
03

Google Business Profile for Each Community

Google allows a profile for the sales or leasing office at each community. We set up and manage each one with the right categories, photos, posts, and a plan for collecting reviews.

  • Profile setup and verification support
  • Photo and post schedule
  • Review request and response process
04

Neighbourhood Content

Guides to the area around each community: commute times, schools, hospitals, shopping, and what daily life is like. Our real estate content SEO team writes each one from local detail you give us, not from a template.

  • Neighbourhood guide per community
  • "Apartments near [landmark]" pages
  • Renter and buyer guides
05

Apartment Schema Markup

Structured data that tells search engines and AI assistants what each unit offers. It supports visibility in AI search as well as standard results.

  • ApartmentComplex and Apartment markup
  • Floor plan and offer details
  • FAQ markup
06

Local Links and Citations

Listings and links from local directories, business associations, and area publications, built through our real estate link building service, with name, address, and phone details kept consistent.

  • Citation audit and clean-up
  • Local link outreach
  • Monthly link report
Structured Data

Markup That Describes Your Units to Search Engines

Search engines and AI assistants read structured data to understand what a page offers. For apartments, that means bedrooms, floor size, amenities, pet policy, and how to book a visit.

ApartmentComplexApartmentFloorPlanOfferFAQPage

Schema does not guarantee a special listing in the results. It does remove guesswork, which matters more as people ask AI tools questions like "which apartments near [landmark] allow pets?". That is the focus of our work on Google AI Overviews, GEO, and AEO.

  • Visit bookings and brochure requests
  • Rankings by unit type and locality
  • Google Business Profile calls and direction requests
  • Organic leads compared with portal leads

Locality and unit-type searches tend to move first. Competitive city-wide searches usually take longer than 90 days, and we will tell you so at the start. Our real estate SEO strategy guide explains why.

Apartment SEO for Sales, Leasing, and Short Stays

  • Pre-launch project pages
  • Configuration and price-range pages
  • Brand searches protected from portals
Goal: fill vacancies

Rental Communities and Property Managers

For leasing teams, we focus on availability, unit types, and Maps visibility across every community you manage.

  • Availability pages kept current
  • One strategy across multiple communities
  • Review generation at each location
Goal: book stays

Serviced and Co-Living Apartments

For furnished, serviced, and shared living, we target searches by length of stay, workplace, and campus.

  • "Near [office or university]" pages
  • Corporate and student housing terms
  • Direct bookings over third-party platforms

Questions

Apartment SEO Questions, Answered

Straight answers to what developers and leasing teams ask us most. More guides are on our real estate SEO blog.

What is apartment SEO?

Apartment SEO is the work of making an apartment community or project visible in search results when people look for a place to rent or buy. It covers floor plan pages, neighbourhood content, the Google Business Profile for your sales or leasing office, structured data, and local links.

How is apartment SEO different from general real estate SEO?

The searches are narrower and the inventory changes faster. People search by bedroom count, budget, amenities, and landmarks, so the site needs a page for each of those. Units also get leased or sold, which means pages, availability, and markup have to be kept current. Our local SEO guide for real estate agents covers the basics the two share.

Can one apartment community outrank the big listing portals?

For broad searches like "apartments in [city]", portals usually hold the top positions and that is hard to change. For specific searches, such as your project name, a unit type in your locality, an amenity, or a nearby landmark, a well-built community website and Google Business Profile can rank above them. That is where we focus first.

What should happen to a page when a unit is leased or sold out?

Keep the page live and update its status. A floor plan page that has earned rankings and links keeps its value, and it can collect waitlist enquiries until the next unit opens. Deleting it throws that value away.

Do you work with projects that have not launched yet?

Yes. Starting before launch gives search engines time to index the project pages, so they are already visible when your marketing begins. We set up the project page, configuration pages, and location content early, then add availability and pricing when you release them.

Do we need a separate Google Business Profile for each building?

Google allows a profile for a sales or leasing office at each community, but not for individual vacant units. If you have several communities with staffed offices, each can have its own profile, and we manage them together.

How long does apartment SEO take to bring enquiries?

Most communities see meaningful movement within three to six months. Branded and locality searches tend to improve first, and competitive city-wide terms take longer. We give you a timeline for your own market during the free audit.

How do you measure whether it is working?

By the enquiries, calls, and visit bookings that come from organic search, compared with what you receive from portals. Rankings and traffic are tracked too, but they only matter when they lead to those outcomes.
